Little Loony Logs

When Julie K announced a new round of Log Cabin Loonies, I was all excited.  I'd played along last time and enjoyed making stacks of little log cabin blocks.

"Woohoo!" I thought.  "I'll just pull out those blocks and start up again!"

But I searched high and low for them with no results.

Huh.

I was convinced that I'd put them in such a safe place that they had vanished altogether, until Cathy had a good thought - she asked me if I'd used them in my Gwennie Medallion quilt.  I do believe she's right!

Which gives me a perfect excuse to start over with a new project, right?  Because technically it's not a new project at all, being a continuation of an old project.  (These technicalities are so useful.)

I located the bin of 1" strips that were leftover from some other adventure (maybe Long Time Gone's pineapples?) and got right to work.

Little by little, these little loonies are growing.

In case anyone asks...

If you make enough of these -

and turn them into these -

eventually you have 136 of them.  That's 136 out of 256.

That's right, folks.  I'm now officially more than half demented.

Jacks and Buckeyes in the Sunflower patch

Some happy orange sewing happened this week.

A couple of Jacks,

and a couple of buckeyes.

These were all excellent leader/enders for the sunflower ring that magically appeared on my sewing table.

This is Sunflower block #3, with my traditional center-dither.

A bit of Kaffe?

Maybe a batik?

Maybe a less muddy batik?

Then I tried this old print.

Oh my, yes!  Though it's possible something else might come along that I like better, I can't even imagine it.

And I even started pulling fabric for Sunflower #4.

Anyone surprised that there's more orange?

Getting August squared away

I've really enjoyed the blocks that Angela and Mari have come up with for this year's RSC Sampler.  Every one of them has been something that I want to eventually make a whole quilt from.
This month's orange block is no exception -

I think it would be a lot of fun to play with - maybe set on point?

Flushed with success, I went back for May.  Somehow I hadn't gotten around to making the block for pink month, so I pulled some pinks, then quickly cut and stitched this whirligig of a block.

My goal has been to get at least one of each block made as we go along, and now I'm caught up.  My ultimate plan is to set the rainbow blocks with alternate Irish chain blocks.  I've got a black fabric with multicolor polka dots that would be perfect for the chains.
Unless I change my mind, of course.  Like that could happen, right?

2018 Pets on Quilts!

Over the years, I've enjoyed seeing all the pets on quilts at Lily Pad Quilting, but haven't entered anything myself.

Lynx told me that he wants to be included this year, though, so here's his favorite photo of himself owning a quilt.

I'd set my hand-quilting down for a moment while I went to get another cup of coffee, then returned to find this -

Why's he always gotta pop the hoop?

Now I'm off to link my Lynx at the 2018 Pets on Quilts show.  Come along and enjoy the fun!

Hip deep in squirrels

Astonishing, I know...

I finally decided which center to use in the first squirrelflower... er, sunflower block.  This plaid just leaped out of a stack of fabric and insisted it was The One.

I'm not going to argue.

The second block was easier.

Now I just need to decide on the backgrounds.  That shouldn't take any time at all, right?
Right.

Squirrel Chips...  umm, I mean Potato Chips continue to accumulate, too.

The orange ones are particularly good to see since it's the RSC color for August.

And it's an ongoing squirrel since it's way too easy to cut more triangles as I go along.  No end in sight!

Speaking of triangles, I'm up to 92 of the Demented blocks, out of 256.

Despite that running tally, I'm not purposely making 20 blocks at a time.  I guess that when the stack of new blocks gets about that tall, I decide that I should count them up and add them to the bin.

I'm at the point where I'll be assembling eightsies into sixteensies again - let's see if this time I can hold out past 20 before I get too curious.  Just to break the chain, you understand.

I hate being predictable.  Well, other than the fact that you can depend on me to chase squirrels.

RSC at last!

It's orange month for the RSC, which is my favorite.  I dug through my piles of scraps and started pulling pretties out to play.
First up was a pinwheel block - these have gotten short shrift in the last several months, so it felt good to get one done.

And then I absolutely didn't start another squirrel project nope nope nope.  Not me nosirree bob.  Nope.
Since I've been thinking about this one for months, and long-ago found the templates on sale, and was inspired by Cathy (repeatedly), I'm counting this one as something I already had in progress.  The only difference is now I'm using fabric instead of ether and whimsy.

I got the petals ring done, and then started auditioning centers.

Decisions decisions.

I hope I can decide before I have to go through it all again for the second one...
