How Now, Brown... er... Star

Brown is the color for October, and since I'm finally home with my stash, I can make a brown Ohio star or two.

The smaller one is for my rainbow Ohio quilt, and the larger one is an experiment that got away from me (geometry is usually my friend, but will sometimes betray me...), so I went with it and ended up with a larger star.  It will end up in my growing pile of orphan/digression blocks.  (There'll be a quilt in there eventually.)

And as a Public Service Announcement -

When Lee Anna recommends a quilt shop, run, do not walk.  While I was on vacation, she told me not to miss a visit to Capital Quilts.
I'm ever so glad I listened to her.  I found a couple of things.  8)

My daughter and I spent a happy chunk of the afternoon looking at everything (and I do mean everything), gathering treasures, and enjoying all the pretties.  And, oh my, were there a lot of pretties!

You might notice a kaleidoscope ruler in that pile.  I wasn't going to buy that.  But I'd been drooling over some kaleidoscope blocks (I'm looking at you, Cathy), so when I saw it, I picked it up.
Then I thought about how many quilts I have already in progress, plus the ones in queue, and I put the ruler back.
My path through the store took me past the ruler section again.   I thought that by the time I was ready for that ruler, I might not be able to find one.  So I picked it up again.
Then I thought about how I'd want to play with it as soon as I got it home, and I'd end up even deeper in diversions than I already am.  So I put it back and wandered off to look at other things.
Then I found myself back at the ruler section again. I thought about the fact that it will be more expensive in the future.  So I picked it up again, because clearly that's the sensible path.
Then I thought about the fact that I would have to hide it from myself in order to stay on task, and then I'd forget where I put it and it would be gone forever, so there was no sense in getting it at all.  So I put it back.
And then somehow I found it back in my hand as I was headed for the checkout line.

I know when I'm licked.

LOL That is so like me. I argue with myself too when I'm in a fabric store. Pretty loot bag you got and I am glad you bought the ruler. I will patiently wait to see what beauty you'll make ... eventually. No rush, I'm still young lol.

I try and talk myself out of things too. But we all know who is going to win in the end. Happy to hear you are back to your scraps!

So funny! I do the exact same thing sometimes, especially when I go to a quilt store with my mom and can't just leave when I want!

Welcome back! You were missed! Glad you took a licking...you'll take a liking to that ruler...you'll see!! Great things will come from it. BUT you have to make several quilts using that ruler so it pays for itself and you don't feel guilty for that licking you took. Ask me how I know...

A quilting friend and I discovered a new quilt shop not too far away. It is FABULOUS, imho -- lots of fabrics and patterns that are not the traditional ones. She also has traditional stuff, but I'm a rebel ;-)

I like how the Ohio Star blocks turned out. I have a basket full of orphan blocks, too. They'll get used for something - eventually! Sounds like you had a fun trip to a new-to-you quilt store!

Still laughing about your adventure with the ruler. You know you will need to use it today, don't you!
Shame I live across the other side of the world, or I might be diverted like that too..... It sure happens here :)

Sometimes you just have to try out something new - a sample block just to make sure you understand how the ruler works. It doesn't have to be an entire quilt right away. It could be a scrap happy project, just a block or two every month. That way there's time to finish up all the other projects on the go. Ha, ha!

You should definitely put the ruler someplace safe so that you can find it as soon as you are ready to start something new. Having a new project in the wings is often just the right motivation to get us finishing off old projects. Yes, it sounds like you really did need to get the ruler. With all the scraps it will help you use, it would have been irresponsible not to.
