Grrrr...
I absolutely cannot get a good photo of Onyx's fleece. I've been carding some up, and I really want to show it off, but every photo comes out looking like crap. It's the most beautiful black/gray fluff you'll never see - so light and airy that I'm afraid it'll float away.
And apparently it's so fluffy that the camera can't focus on it.

Perhaps in bright daylight the camera could focus. I know my camera has a harder time when the light is not so good.
Do you have a scanner? I find that most of the time my scanner takes better pictures of yarn and the color is more accurate.
I guess you'll just have to spin some into yarn and knit it up for us to really see. ;^)
O.k. I'm playing with my darkest yarns here (and, uh, a black dog - because what good is testing photography if your subject just sits there?) I'd try bright bright side light - so early morning sun or late afternoon. You'll only have a few minutes - or you need a really good light. A light box would help - that would be a white background and white surface - it'll reflect the light up and around.
The other thing I've learned - as much as I hate it - is that I should just use the focal length of the lens I have. I do not have a macro lens, so I should not try to pretend I do. (That's like some sort of code words for "back up a bit". It won't be the close up I desire - or match the picture in my head - but it will get the colors better.)
Also - spinning into to yarn would help with focusing, shadows, and reflecting light ;)
