With a free afternoon and no snow falling, I finally caught up with Libby's Mystery today.
It was an easy clue she gave us - just sew the rectangles together.
So I did.
And then, I had to play with them, of course.
And then, since I've never been one to leave well enough alone, I cut out some more pieces from another color.
And then I had even more things to play with.
Meanwhile, I was working on this.
Which, to my joy, became this -
Burgoyne is officially Surrounded. I sincerely love this quilt (it looks even better in real life!), and I'm so grateful to Cathy for making hers and inspiring me to make my own.
Now I just need to think about a border. I definitely want to run some neutrals around the outside edge, in order to float the whole thing. It's just a question of if I want anything else. You just know I want to make some fun fantastic pieced border that will be way more complicated than necessary, because that's what I do.
We'll see if I can restrain myself...

Congrats on Surrounding Mr. Burgoyne. And if once works, why not surround him again with a signature great border?! It’s looking wonderful. Tempting. Wonderfully tempting. 😍
ReplyDeleteOooh! How satisfying! Your prettiest one yet. Can't wait to see the unnecessarily complicated (yet perfect) border. A78mandel at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to make it to the studio. BS is impressive and your mystery blocks look good.
ReplyDeletelove both of the tops you show - I need to cut some bars from the scraps and do up a pattern, you show several versions I like
ReplyDeleteYour rectangles are giving me all kinds of ideas for a Jelly Roll I have.
ReplyDeleteI like your happy rail colors! Looking forward to this week's clue :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! But is it large enough? Does it have enough cats? Don't you think miniature Burgoyne surrounded blocks would make an awesome border?
ReplyDeleteI've loved following your progress with your 'Burgoyne Surrounded' quilt, it's looking amazing! Thanks for sharing with 'sew stitch snap SHARE'
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Cathy: your borders are one of your signatures. Why not make Burgoyne truly yours by adding one? Even if you kept it mostly neutral, it would surely still be yours :)
ReplyDeleteIncredible how fast an afternoon flies by when we have little units of quilt blocks to play with. Love the red fabric in the first picture. Wow! It plays really well with that yellow too. Congratulations on getting Burgoyne so close to the final stretch home. I know you will come up with something for the borders. You are so much better than me for that. Enjoy the dithering, lol. ;^)
ReplyDeleteI love how you played with the mystery rectangles - wish I would have thought to do that! I am cutting and playing with a few more this week. Burgoyne looks wonderful - I'm looking forward to seeing that amazing border!
ReplyDeleteSo good to see Burgoyne all read for a border, it looks beautiful, you must be so pleased.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the border! I guess then you would be surrounded at the border. Great fabric picks for Libby's Magical Mystery Tour.
ReplyDeleteJealous of your Burgoyne progress - but INSPIRED! (yeah, that's the ticket!) It looks fantastic so far, can't wait to see what comes next!
ReplyDeleteI have been toying with some pieced borders for my BS quilt too. Just can’t seem to keep it simple. Your scrappy version is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed watching Burgoyne grow over time / looks wonderful! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your Burgoyne..it looks great in the scrappy fabrics and I look forward to seeing what you decide to do for your outer border - if you go that way! Cute little mystery blocks too - it will be interesting to see what they end up doing.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun to play with pieces for a mystery quilt. Sometimes I like the results of playing better than the end of the mystery!
ReplyDeleteYour Burgoyne Surrounded quilt is stunning! Just gorgeous, Gayle. I love the subtle colors you chose and the secondary pattern created by the diagonals. How long did it take you to sew each block? There must be 100 pieces of fabric in each block! So beautiful!
