Four-patches and more four-patches and a big stack of squirrels

Still playing with my four patches.   The fabulous Sally T left a comment on my last four-patch post that I really took to heart.  She said she was disappointed to find that what looked like an orange double four-patch block was actually pink instead.

Orange...  Of course!

One orange block, coming right up!

And I set the two blocks on a handy hunk of purple, along with a few 1.5" squares.  You know, just for grins.

Maybe another block?  I could make a table runner...

So another pink block appeared.  And then, because one good orange deserves another -

Now I had four blocks made.

Let the games begin!

Easy is as easy does - I just set them down next to each other.

Maybe a narrow sashing?  That handy hunk of purple was still right there.

Cornerstones, anyone?

Maybe a 2" sashing instead of a 1" one?

Cornerstones?

Four-patches for cornerstones?

Or maybe a turquoise hunk?

Maybe more blocks?  These double four-patch blocks will finish at eleven inches, so I've got a possible table topper at this point, or a wall quilt.  Do I want to keep going?

The dithering is always the best part...  Maybe I should do one of each?

Oh, and that stack of squirrels I mentioned in the title?  Martingale had a book sale.  I'm always a sucker for a good sale.  Some are for me, and some might go for Christmas gifts, if I can manage to pry them out of my own hands.

At least one of those books is the kind where I want to make every single one of the quilts.

I may need to buy a day-stretcher.

Linking with Quilting is more fun than Housework for Cynthia's Oh Scrap! party.  Come see all the goodies!

  1. You know... I'm starting to think it's a good thing I don't do drugs... your blog would REALLY trip me out!

  2. And another idea for my 4-patch "leader/enders" that I do while sewing together other blocks for other quilts. Thank you :-) :-)

  3. I bet the Nickel Quilts book is the one. If not, it should be! I have made several from her books already. Just a warning (though she may have corrected this in the reprint): in the original books she assumed you were working with 5" charm squares and sometimes the first instruction is to cut them down to another size. So read through all the instructions before cutting from yardage! Remind me to tell you my Labor Day Madness story.

  4. I like to lurk and watch others dither because it's not allowed at my house! I let others do the dithering work and find out what I like and don't like from my dither peeping.

I know you will want to make every quilt in that 19th Century Patchwork Diva book. I do!

  5. Playing with new patterns and designs is always so much fun. No wonder quilters always have so many UFOs. Enjoy those books, lots more potential projects hiding in that stack.

  6. I agree that dithering with possibilities is FUN! Really like the big four patch framed blocks, too.

  7. Just realized that I have missed a few of your posts. Love your 4-patch blocks. Yes, I agree, you needed some orange one in there. My vote is for the 1" cornerstones with purple hunk. It will be so lovely IMHO. Great books you got there. Please order a day-stretcher for me too. I'll pay you back, no matter the price. lol. Enjoy doing all those quilts before Christmas so you can give the books away after. ;^)

  8. Your dithering is always fun to participate in! Did you make any decisions?

  9. Oh wow, those are all hard choices. Any of them would look great. No decision is a decision. However, that doesn't help move a project along. Hope you were able to decide on your own, as obviously, I'm no help.

  10. Ha! When you find a good day-stretcher, send me the link! Love the blue/purple fabric. It really sets off those scrappy blocks. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  11. I love how the purple makes the blocks pop. I'm joining the others in saying that it's fun to watch your dithering! I dither so much in my head that I struggle to get anything at all done. You are inspiring!

  12. It sure looks like it wants to be a full size quilt...with four patch cornerstones. A tabletopper isn't large enough to hide a kitten...or so I'm told.

  13. Yes, I agree with Sally, a full sized scrappy quilt is the way to go now! I've just been relooking at my 'nickel' book too, lots of ideas in that one, I'm especially taken with the 'buffalo trails' quilt, in plaids!

  14. I vote for the purple 1" sashing, cornerstones optional. Haven't read the other comments because I.Know.What's.Best.

  15. Oh! The scrappy goodness, Gayle!! I'm loving these Double (triple?) 4-Patch blocks and that turquoise works well. It's a better scale than the purple. Also, I absolutely ADORE the 4-Patch cornerstones!! I think they set the blocks off perfectly.

  16. I should be dithering too with these lovely blocks, you have plenty of choice for the setting but why not make a full size quilt - it would be wonderful.

  17. When you find a source for that day stretcher let me know will ya?!
