Well, November seems to be slipping through my fingers...
I finally decided what I wanted to do for a setting for my piglets, after seeing Deb's wonky little houses at Happy to be Scrappy. I'd wanted to make the piglets look like they're chasing each other back and forth across the quilt, but a straight setting seemed too tame for these little rascals. I've already fixed on naming the quilt 'Higgledy Piggledy', and that implies some action and movement.
So I made an uphill piggy
and a downhill piggy
and sewed them together to see how they'd look. Because I've found that not everything looks as good in real life as it looks in my head.
Very promising...
So I cut some more pieces and started laying them out.
I like it!
I've got quite a few blocks stitched into their frames so far, with tons more to go before I start a final layout. But I think it's going to be great!
And as long as I was auditioning piglets, I started auditioning sashing, too. I want to put a plain strip of 'ground' in between the blocks, so it will look like they're actually running on something and not just levitating.
At first I was going to use random strips and squares, but as busy as the blocks are, I think the eye is going to need a place to rest. So my second idea is to use one print for all the ground strips, in order to tie it all together.
But dark?
Or light?
Green or brown? Blue? Purple? I'm going to have to make a decision soon, because these blocks are going together fast!
And now that I'm home again, I got a chance to root through my stash to pull fabrics for En Provence. I was thinking I might have to buy some fabric.
Silly me - looks like I have plenty.
Not that that'll stop me...

Porcine chaos! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWho knew you could make those piggies even more awesome!
I like it! Thinking a lighter sashing, but I know you'll find something that's just right.
ReplyDeleteOh! Who left the gate opened? The pigs are all about. Run, little piggies, run! It will be such a fun quilt. I vote for a light sashing but don't know in which colour. Enjoy the decision process.
ReplyDeleteYou're going En Provence? I am hesitating. I already have so many. I'll check it from reeeaalll close but still from the sideline. Enjoy the shopping. ;^)
Oh, how cute!!!!...and creative!!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome home!
Yes, little piglets can run all scattery for sure. Keep auditioning the sashing and something will jump out at you.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. They are so cute and I love the setting
ReplyDeleteYour up and down settings are brilliant! I like the green sashing - it looks like grass to me, and like the piggies are definitely running up and down the hills. Looks like this will be a lot of fun to put together!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be the cutest quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat about a black with multi- brights or a black and white/dark charcoal ground sashing? Your setting is awesome - run with it (giggle).
ReplyDeleteGrass or dirt colored fabric will make those running piglets feel right at home. Keep rooting around in your stash!! (You found some great fabrics for the BH Mystery, so surely you'll find something.)
ReplyDeleteAaaaagh! You are so brilliant. Piglets running up and down hill is perfect. You made them come alive!
ReplyDeleteperfect choice!! I love the running up and down idea. These are just adorable done this way. I like the light green better. Or just the right grass fabric maybe.
ReplyDeleteWe visited one of those historic working farms once, and a woman wanted to collect the piglets. She picked one up, squirming and screaming loudly enough to alert the media! The other ran alongside screaming too. She said, pick one up and they all come!
SCreaming! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I agree that you've found the perfect setting to make the piggies come alive. And my first thought for sashing was a green that looked like grass, but maybe it should be a muddy brown (much harder to look lively though). Whatever you choose, it will be delightful. Now what about those monkeys?
ReplyDeleteThat is the perfect idea!!! How cute are they following each other like that?! Well, well, well done!
ReplyDeletePerfect piggy setting!
ReplyDeleteI love the up and down piggies--so fun!
ReplyDeleteI love the up and down piggies--so fun!
ReplyDeleteLove the setting for the piglets! It is perfect. I'd probably go with dark sashing, it fades into the background more than the lighter sashing does.
ReplyDeleteI knew you would come up with a perfect layout. I love those little piggies! Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
ReplyDeleteOMG Gayle, I love how you are setting your piggies, so creative and fun!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I prefer the darker sashing. I really like that pig in the 3rd row-going the wrong way!
ReplyDeleteThey are having more fun than ever, nonstop. I like the lighter green. It lets the piggies be the spotlight and blends in with the little hills. Have fun with them. We sure have had lots of laughs.
ReplyDeleteI would do a mixture of grass sashing rows. I'd even think of doing some piglets on flat ground. A mixture is good. It is such a fun design... good luck with your decisions...
ReplyDeleteLove your layout, very cute! I quite like the darkish strips, makes those mischief piggies standout well! Am sure whatever you end up deciding will look wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great idea ; I just love them in this whimsical setting!
ReplyDeleteHiggledy Piggledy will be a smashing success! I love seeing the piglets scurry uphill and down. The lighter green grassy color is really pretty for the sashing.
ReplyDeleteThose little piglets are cute as they can be! Love seeing them going up and down hill.
ReplyDeleteLet the Bonnie Hunter MQ fun begin!
Oh, I love how you're setting the piggies! Carry on, carry on! Don't run off to Provence too quickly!
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea for setting the piggies! Such a fun quilt it will be!
