Apparently this hot weather we've been having has melted portions of my brain, because I was sure I'd thrown up a post on Monday or Tuesday. Hmm...
Anxious to finish up June, I made a few aqua kaleidoscopes this week, which will soon be followed by some pink ones (because kaleidoscopes, ya know?),
and some whatchacallit stars for both June and July.
And little Scribbles, here, nosed her way to the front of the line.
What could be cuter than those polka dot ears?
Well, that polka dot tail, I guess, but still.
My other big time-consumer this week was playing with logs. Specifically, a bunch of courthouse steps blocks to see how they would look with my medallion quilts.
Since I'm also playing along with the other Log Cabin Loonies, a bunch of log cabin blocks can never be a bad thing. If they don't go into the medallions, I'm sure I'll find a good use for them. In the meantime, they're a soothing block to work on when it's too hot to think. And following Julie's excellent tip, I'm making the logs with 1.25" strips, which are easily made by slicing a 2.5" strip right down the middle. Since I have buckets of 2.5" strips, this has made log rolling a whole lot simpler!
And I've made the opening moves on another quilt. (Because it's already a week of July gone and I hadn't started a new quilt yet, right?) This is going to be a bed-sized Storm at Sea in scrappy blues and greens. So far I've just started cutting pieces for it, but I had to make a few components to make sure everything fit together right, of course.
Can you imagine how much fun I'm going to have, dithering around with arranging all those hundreds of block parts? It'll keep me busy for days and days. And days.
Though it occurs to me that I'll be a lot happier if I have a design wall by then...
Linking with So Scrappy for ScrapHappy Saturday. Come see all the pink fun!
And since so much of this is about scraps, I'll also link to Quilting is More Fun than Housework for Oh Scrap!
Between the two of them, they make my weekends a blast! Always so much pretty to look at!
Had good old chuckle several times along the way reading your post! Oh I can relate to the hot days melting your brain, though for me these days it doesn't take much to melt my menopausal brain cells! That piggy is just too darn cute, and glad to see someone else is still mucking around (ha) with some turquoise/aqua scraps. Also, Storm at Sea is a pattern I've wanted to make forEVER...yours is looking terrific.
ReplyDeleteLots of exciting projects on the go... I always enjoy reading your posts! Ah yes, stormatsea, an oldie but a goodie, and perfect for those scraps! Hard to chose a fav between your basket medallions, both looking wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get the memo that we're supposed to start a new quilt. Or that we're supposed to be making TWO Gwennie medallions and that we're still cranking out aqua blocks. How do you get so much done AND attend over-achievers anonymous meetings?
ReplyDeleteYour kaleidoscopes and stars look great in the aquas and pinks! I'm going to have to put those blocks on my list for "sometime." Before you know it, I will be trying them just for fun!
ReplyDeleteA new quilt begun for the start of a new month? Make perfect sense to me!! LOL
ReplyDeleteIn that forgotten post did you mention the new edict about a monthly quilt? Because I'm just thinking about adding one more block this month, so I guess I'm out of the running for whatever. Your output, along with some other dear folks, is amazing to me. As long as Ms. Squiggles is there, all is right with the world. Your medallions are both coming along so well, whatever you choose will be good. Thanks for the tip from Julie, I must have missed it. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteLove that cute little piggy!
ReplyDeleteLove Miss Scribbles; so barn cute ... I mean, so darn cute (hehe!) I thought you had traded your sewing machine for a hammer but I see that you traded it for a sea cruise! Believe it or not, I've been hoarding teal fabrics for such a quilt for years. Never had the guts to start cutting. Your blocks are very lovely. As are the two medallions. We never have too many log cabins. Enjoy the dithering (lol) ;^)
ReplyDeleteLoving your medallions, especially the sunflower one! I started a Storm at Sea many years ago; finally gave up on it a) because I disliked my fabric choice, and b) as a new quilter I had trouble with the long diamond units. Still want to make one and I think I could master those diamonds after 15 years of experience.
ReplyDeleteLove the chevron fabric in the teal kaleioscopes - it really makes them look like the old TV test pattern. The log cabin blocks are amazing! My hat is off to you, as I don't like working with such narrow strips. The storm at sea looks wonderful, too. I've decided square in a square blocks are my nemesis and never want to make them again, so I'll enjoy watching all of yours evolve!
ReplyDeleteStorm at Sea???? Yikes!! Your brain is melting. (That's the chosen block for one lady in our birthday block swap and I've been dreading making the darned thing but her birthday is this month so I need to git er done).
ReplyDeleteI like the logs (or kindling) borders you've got going. I think keeping with the traditional red center really makes them shine.
Love the wild kaleidoscopes and of course Miss Piggy. You can never go wrong with polka dots. The scribbles...well, there's a funny family story that involves scribbles, some permanent marker and a private body part that doesn't have hair when you are three years old unless you draw it in with that permanent marker!
Pink piggies are the best! Polka dots make it even better. (Like Julie, I slice old binding in half to use for piecing, too). Really like your courthouse step blocks - I've been making liberated log cabins for mine.
ReplyDeletePerfect pink piggy! I'm looking forward to seeing that project all put together, those blocks are such fun. The storm at sea is shaping up beautifully.
ReplyDeleteWonderful blocks! Love piggy, love storm at sea and who doesn't love court house steps and log cabins?!
ReplyDeleteI love all the colour in your medallion quilts! I was actually thinking the other day that I haven't made a log cabin quilt in a long time.
ReplyDeleteYou were really busy this week! Love your little pink piggie. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap and reminding us it is time to start a new quilt! :)
ReplyDeleteThat polka dot piglet is the cutest ever. I haven't found mine yet. Have to clean up my sewing space tomorrow to find them.
ReplyDeleteI love the kaleidoscopes--very cool! I haven't started my log cabin round yet--yikes!
ReplyDeleteWow, you did gobs of piecing, good job! Nice start on the Storm At Sea, too.
ReplyDeleteOnce again I'm speechless at the amount of nervy you mushy have to turn out all these wonderful things!! Your Medallion QAL is looking so bright sand cheerful and well on the way rot be ready for the August Link.
ReplyDeleteI have to confess, I've been thinking seriously about purchasing a ruler for kaleidoscope blocks the last couple of days. I really like the way that chevron stripe works in your blocks. I hope you can figure out a way/place for a design wall. You'll find it immensely helpful. The log cabins look great with your medallion basket.
ReplyDeleteThose aqua kaleidoscopes are oddly crazy and calming all at the same time...
ReplyDeleteAnd scribbles couldn't be more perfect!
I was amazed with your sunflowers before - loving it even more with the cabins around it.
Great projects! The more pieces, the more fun, right?
