I'm feeling better, but my computer isn't...

My hard drive is dying, which is the root of all my computer woes.  I'm dithering whether to replace the hard drive (and update Windows from XP which I've been happily running all these years) (and given my history with installing hard drives (ack! hardware!) this might not be the best option) (definitely not the easiest option) or if I should just bite the bullet and buy a new computer.
Argh.

So here's a couple of quick photos, in case Old Faithful here craps out on me.
The last of the February 365 Challenge blocks, before starting the center medallion that wraps up the month.

A couple of Chantal's Pinwheels in purple.

And an applique quilt I saw and coveted at a quilt show I went to with my sister-in-law yesterday.  (I want to make it with a dark background, though, I think...)

I've got tons of pics from the show, but I want to get this posted.  If I'm still operational later, I'll throw together a brief tour of the show - there were some beauties!
For now, I'll just be over here in the corner, swearing quietly at hard drives.
Argh.

Linking with SoScrappy's ScrapHappy Saturday.  Rather quickly, I might add...

  2. oh noooooooo
another operating system to learn. And people aren't haps with this latest one.
I'm nearing your boat, swimming along side. Let me know what you decide... maybe I should bite the bullet and buy a new computer and keep this one for design work.

  3. I scanned your pictures before I read the text and immediately assumed that you had finished an applique quilt in the middle of everything else. SO glad to know its a future project... :) Meanwhile, good luck with your computer.

  7. Sorry about your computer woes. My own "swear inducing" problem is that my computer frequently refuses to connect with our WiFi. UGH!!

  8. I run a Mac (primary) and also use a PC (Windows 8). I prefer my Mac . . . good luck deciding what to do!

  9. Good luck with your swearing but I don't think it's going to fix the problem. I'm a long time Mac fan, never had anything else and presently have an iMac plus the iPad. I find them so easy to use and never, ever had any problems.

  10. I know what you mean about XP. Had it for years. Now I'm up to 8.1, dreading going to 10. Best wishes!

  11. We do a new hard drive every 3 or 4 years and I'm on windows 8 and resisting the steep learning curve to go to 10 just like Libby. May your solutions be easy, no matter what you choose! In the meantime, the blocks are really pretty!

  12. Nice work. Love the quilt from the quilt show. Could be so dramatic with a dark background. I sticking with Windows 7. The windows 10 is great if you've got a touch screen which I don't so am not upgrading. Good luck with the computer woes.

  13. I took my computer in thinking it was the hard drive. They told me it was the motherboard. I questioned their skills under my breath until I got a hold of my computer geek BIL. He says it is entirely possible. So I had to quit bad mouthing them. I still haven't decided what to do. My computer is setting on the shelf and I'm using Hubby's with XP on it. Like Nell, Windows 7 is great and not that hard to move up to from XP. If you don't have a touch screen, 10 is not the way to go until Microsoft gets the bugs worked out.

  14. I gave up my PC about three years ago because it took up too much space. Now I use only an iPad, love the freedom and ease of use. If I need something printed I ask my SIL. I've gotten around some Google issues by using Chrome for comments. Plus now I have a sewing work center in the space I gained. Your blocks are coming along beautifully.. At least your sewing machine is working. Good luck whatever you decide.

  16. Can't go wrong with purple pinwheels and I love the idea of the applique quilt with a dark background! Good luck with your computer issues; I gave up on PCs a long time ago, but making the jump to Mac has a learning curve too. Not to mention a little more expensive than PC.

  17. So sorry to hear about your woes. Whenever I'm in doubt, I go for the red ... whine! hehehe! Personally always had PC. Got a laptop 3 years ago and within a month gave it to the boys. Didn't like it. I need my keyboard. Have Window 8 as this is what we use at the office. Much easier that way. :^) Didn't upgrade to Window 10 because I don't have a touchscreen and geek nephew said there were some glitches to fix in it. Whatever you change to, you will have to learn some new tricks. No two programs are the same. So good luck with that decision.
The applique quilt would be so awesome with a dark background. Can't wait to see more of the show. Love Chantal's in purple. (hehehe!) Hope you can still log on for a long time to come. ;^)

  18. Oh how I miss XP.
Were running windows 7 on most of our computers, but Mom has windows 8. Whatever you do, don't let them talk you into Windows 10... a little too much "big brother" if you ask me.
The pinwheels are pretty. Hopefully I can get the studio cleaned while Dave is away, and finally get in there and sew some of my own.

  19. Just got a new laptop with Windows 10 a few months ago and I hate, hate, hate Windows 10. I had an XP laptop before that and never, never, never had a problem. Thought I might as well get a new computer before I retire next year as well as for security reasons.

That applique quilt is a beauty. I wish I loved applique. There are so many beautiful applique projects I wish I would love to try.

  20. Ya'll please don't throw stones at me, but I've never had a hard drive "die" on me, and I don't know why. I currently use Win 7 on a simple HP I got for $100 on ebay with Word 2007 installed & some other basic stuff like DVD and paint, etc. -- and no 'bloatware'!! The last 3 pc's I got for my kids at Best Buy are awful!!!! Also, I'm still using a windows vista pc my mom bought me in 2006 but only rarely because the screen is slightly broken. From now on ALL my cptrs will come from ebay without bloatware! Also, I've always run a 'clean' hard drive -- no automatic updates, no tons of varous old files piling up. I just say all this to offer an idea why some hard drives may 'die' and others not?? p.s. I've always used free Avast virus protection and it's never failed me. Hope that helps anyone. (pps. Hope I didn't just jinx myself, lol.)

  21. I hope you are doing a lot of backups, and backing up your backups - something I recommend whether or not the hard drive is complaining.
