The media has everyone so panicked up here that everything is getting cancelled - the county fair will be closed tomorrow, the local college put off starting classes from Monday until Thursday, every event/meeting possible is being postponed.
The local electric company has announced that if power is lost, they refuse to even consider going out to fix it before Monday.
All the stores are out of D batteries and nearly out of flashlights.
And we haven't had so much as a drop of rain or a breath of breeze, so far.
There are a lot of mountains between us and the coast. I'll be very surprised if we get more that a bucket of rain.
And as for the power going out? This is the Northeast Kingdom. We lose power if anyone even whispers the word 'storm.' We're used to it. Those of us who have lived here for a while know enough to keep a ready supply of candles and batteries on hand.
If you don't hear from me tomorrow, I'll just be up here spinning by headlamp, waiting until Monday when the power company guys dare to go outside...
yeah, there is an emmy award for best coverage for natural disasters.. so every station/network is going all out to win. (how many natural disasters are as photogenic as a big storm with computer graphics and rain and wind? (no fun trying to make an earthquake into an emmy--no advanced warning, no computer graphics.
ReplyDeleteWe have rain (and lightening) but I am on a hill top, so no flooding yet. Its a big nothing.
uh ... really? Where you are?
ReplyDeleteI can look at the graphic (and thankfully say we're at the tail end, and while there is no power and limited flooding and some wind still) it is a storm, not a hurricane. But you seem far away from the action.
Then again, it's not very often we, who are so far away from each other, are living in the same storm.
p.s. Still spoiled with that generator. Omg it is a great thing :)
Heard the hurricane preps spurred the local economy significantly. I will not delve into conspiracy theory at all here. We are getting sheets of rain so far. Irene is still south of us.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Dorothy. Watch out for flying witches. :-)
ReplyDeleteHope all goes well for you with the storm.
ReplyDeleteHmmm can we assume your power went out then? Hope those big brave electrical men are okay with braving the storm today!
ReplyDeleteAre you eating crow yet?....lol. I almost didn't get ready for this storm and was more worried about my kids in RI. However, I did go to the store and got water, a few more canned goods, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt really wacked us! The Winooski River was absolutely frightening today but we fared better here than other parts of the state.
So sad to lose some of those covered bridges and even more sad at the lost of life here in VT
Are you okay, Gayle? How did the farm stand up to the storm?
ReplyDeleteEveryone okay over there?
