Well, maybe it really IS spring, after all...
The surest sign of spring at our house is this:
We've got 77 of the little fluffballs busily eating, sleeping, pooping, and peeping, happily at home in a recycled refrigerator box in our living room.
Fifty-two are Cornish X -
and there are 25 Rhode Island Reds.
They all hunkered down under the light for a few minutes to warm up,
then discovered the food.
They were actually supposed to arrive yesterday, but there was a glitch at the hatchery - the CornishX chicks were a day late hatching. The company said that they'd arrive either Wednesday or Thursday - probably Thursday.
But when I woke up this morning to the sound of rolling thunder and pouring rain, I had a feeling they'd be here today. Oh, yeah...
They're all warm and cosy, but I'm still dripping.
Cute little puffballs! At least they're easy to tell apart.
ReplyDeleteThey are stupidly adorable!!
ReplyDeleteAre these ones for eating or laying?
Ok, this would probably be a wildly inappropriate thing to do, but I want to scoop up handfuls of them and toss them into the air above my head (like rose petals or something) so they can rain down on my head like little soft cheeping puffballs.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I can't have chicks, I guess.
As I looked at the photos of your little puffballs, I heard cheeping and wondered. Then remembered I had this open in another tab:

Way cute!!! I'll have to go by Agway and get my chick fix.
ReplyDelete*that sounded better in my head...
Yay! Spring Chickens!!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I've been through this process many times when at my daughter's. It's really magical!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that always the way? Fingers crossed they're all what they claim to be!

Your very own Easter Peeps! But you don't get to eat these just yet.
ReplyDeleteOMG, wunnerful!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo cute and what timing! ;D How are the little guys doing?
ReplyDelete@Amy, I know! I don't think I could stifle the urge to put one in my mouth-- not to chew it or otherwise mangle it-- but just to put in my mouth for a second and then pop it back out.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet even their poop is fluffy and cute.
Congratulations on your babies. So do tell how you raise your Cornish crosses. I am seriously thinking of switching to Freedom Rangers, although I like the size and juiciness of the Cornish crosses.
ReplyDeleteOh are they cute...but I recall the Easter my father gave in to giving us ducklings. I can still smell the duck poop on the newspapers in the crate .....my sister slept in an dI had to clean it all every morning. Then we let my dad send them to the farm...
ReplyDeletemy dad was a hunter...hmmmm
