Sourdough, Milestones, and Great Balls of Fiber

The other day, when Madman picked me up from work, he asked me "Do you know someone named Erika who would mail you a lumpy envelope?"
"Why, yes," I replied. "Yes, I do."
Erika and I had been emailing back and forth about bread, and she offered to send me some leftover sourdough starter. Dehydrated sourdough starter makes for a lumpy envelope...
So I've got the Son of Makoto. Or, more properly, the little brother of Makoto.
It's been happily bubbling on my counter for days and days. I fed it up good last night, and used it to make this
today. I meant to take a picture of it before cutting into it, but, well, you know...
(And btw, Erika? I cheated and added a tiny bit of dry yeast to the dough, which is why I got such a good rise. Next time, I won't, I swear.) (Really.) (Patience? What patience?)

Hey, look! Little bunny is now eating rabbit pellets! And hay!
*sniff* They grow up so fast...

This is actually a major milestone. We're both breathing a sigh of relief, because it looks like the little booger is really going to make it. After all our recent losses, I don't think we could bear to lose this little sweetie. We've gotten way too attached.
The word "houserabbit" is now in play.
Though a New Zealand White isn't the best choice for a pet rabbit (there are friendlier breeds), at this point this little one is more acclimated to people than other rabbits. We'll have to wait and see as it gets bigger.
I've done weirder things than keep a rabbit in my house.

And last, but certainly not least, I've been washing up and carding a storm of fleece.

I started with Goldie's fleece. Now, to look at her, she looks like your average sheepy-colored sheep. You know, that basic off-white creamy sort of color. Imagine my surprise when I started working with her fleece - it's laced with dark gray and black fibers. The roving is coming out a light heathery gray, which I'm liking a lot.

I've made that little mountain of roving, plus I have twice as much washed and drying. And I still haven't made much of a dent in the fleece.
Do you think she'll be okay with me wearing a sweater made from her fleece? Or is that going to boggle her little sheepy brain?

The more I see of that little bunny the more I want to make him MY house rabbit! Too darn adorable! And I bet being hand fed, and handled since birth he'll do just fine as a people rabbit!

Yes, I think the little sweetie definitely needs to be a house rabbit. It's gotta be easier than driving around with a sheep in your car! Goldie's fleece is beautiful! Can't wait to see it spun up.

Yaaay! On both counts! I'm glad the USPS didn't destroy an envelope with a small baggie full of white powder (although maybe they should have). And I'm relieved to see that bunster is on solid food - that's a big hurdle towards his survivability for sure!

This whole post made me squee with delight!

Sourdough starter - in the mail!! Yay! And the bread looks great :)

That baby bunny is just the cutest little thing. I love his fuzzy fur. And he's eating! Yay! My sister has always kept a rabbit in the house (w dogs and cats and lizards and ferets and such.) So I'm voting that he'll be o.k.

And Goldie's fleece is just beautiful mountains of fuzz! /speechless awe

I'm doubting she will even notice, that Goldie.

The bread looks wonderful! You? No patience? Never. :)

So now that Bunneh looks like a keeper, he/she/it needs a name, hmmm, right? Do I smell a contest?

I'm thinking Goldie may adopt you as her long-lost sister when you get your sweater done. The roving color does look perfect.

Glad the bunneh's doing well.

you remind me that I really ought to feed my starter.

The sheep fuzz is beautiful - I love that heathery look.

*sigh of relief* Give bunny a snorgle for me. I'm glad he's going to make it. And Goldie's wool looks beautiful.

The bread looks wonderful! I love seeing how well the bunneh is doing. Ya know, you should be able to litter box train him/her.

& I love the fluff! What a wonderful natural color.

I'm glad baby bunny is doing so well!

LOVE looking at your fiber balls - haha that sounds a little weird - Looks like beautiful clouds. Isn't it fun to see all the fleece coloring variations?

(I'm envious of your blog title creativity - I'm such a title loser and you are SO GOOD!)

PS - since you mentioned it - I have already impaled my hand/finger tips twice - but after those 2 experiences I am much more careful with the combs and haven't had an accident in the past week.
Those balls don't look like rolags - do you pull roving off the handcards? How do you do it?

Hi! I found your site via Now Norma Knits and was interested in how the little bunny is doing. It's great to see it eating pellets and hay. The one thing that we have found is great for all baby herbivores is Critical Care from Oxbow. It is specifically designed to help rabbits, guinea pigs etc. through stressful times and illnesses. We have found it invaluable and have nursed many sick herbivores through really tough times. Since this little guy has had a rough time I would recommend adding this to his diet because it gives back all the important enzimes critical to his digestion of hay etc. that may have been lost via infant formula. Since it is made for rabbits etc, it is nutritionally complete. You should be able to find CC through your vet or a good pet food store. If not you can order it from Oxbow. I hope you don't mind me offering this advice but I know what it's like to lose baby animals after investing so much time and love. Good luck!

So many delightful things in this post! Yummy sourdough through the generosity of a cross-country knitfriend, a healthy bun-bun, and clouds of fleece -- it's all good. The white with dark fibers is very like the Lopi sweater I knit for myself in 1980 -- gorgeous stuff.

Yay for eating big rabbit food!

The Goldie's fiber looks gorgeous. Wow.

Oh, I think a bunny naming contest is in order! Personally, I think he/she should be named "Dust"; especially since he/she's obviously going to be a housebunny. Don't protest; I don't think you or MadMan could actually put her outside now!

Love Goldie's fleece! I think sweater will be stunning! And Goldie will just have to get over it; lol!
